Okay, HP has been no help in this, so I'm going to pose this question to the community. (It's actually been asked numerous times in other places on the HP site, and no one bothers to answer it.) I have an HP 6005 Small Form Factor PC. It's running the Athlon II processor, ATI graphics, Realtek sound (All integrated) This unit has a displayport++ on the back. I supported these things at a prior job and loved them, so decided to buy one to use as my media center at home. Bought a displayport to HDMI adapter from wish.com (probably my first mistake-all crap there) Connected everything, including the adapter to my TV.

Powered up the machine into a fresh Windows 7 Ultimate environment. Looks great on my TV. Tested netflix and youtube. No sound through the TV.

HP Compaq Pro 6005 Small Form Factor Upgrade Issues; Windows 8.1 & Display Adapter ‎ 03:29 PM OK I have a 6005 Pro and did the upgrade to WIndows 10 it found all the drivers including video drivers and installed them as this is a free upgrade from Windows 7 or WIndow 8/8'1 it probably the best compatability upgrade.

I tried updating the drivers for the graphics and audio card from HP. Didn't do anything. Tried disabling the onboard audio. Still didn't work.

There is all sorts of crap flying around about these machines. HP says it does support audio through the displayport, HP says it doesn't.

I can't find a clear answer. Connecting an audio cable is not an option, because there is no place on the TV for an audio connection.

It has to come from HDMI. I'd rather not buy a video card so I can make this happen, but if I have to, I will. However, I bought this machine specifically because it had the displayport. I will eventually be installing FreeNas on this machine so I can use it for all of our home media.

So, anyone have any experience with these machines? Anyone ever get audio to work out the displayport on them?

Display port does indeed do Audio, with a proper rollover converter to HDMI. I run a very near identical PC for my living room media server, including eventually running FreeNAS. I would recommend running a graphics card still. You will have SIGNIFICANTLY less driver issues down the road when you start playing with FreeNAS, less wear and tear on a box that will see if fair share of thrashing, plus dedicated video processing. As things such as Win 10/XBox streaming become more prevalent, the addition of a GPU will make everything run much nicer. Ofc this is without even beginning to mention VR that is just around the corner.

HDMI can also do ethernet, an add-in GPU and rolling over everything to HDMI might simplify your life considerably. Best of luck, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks buying a 'smart' tv is silly when you can run a MONSTER of a PC instead! Everyone here has given great suggestions, all of which I will take into consideration, especially the adapter. I was thinking the adapter was an issue, anyway.

However, my original question has still not been answered: Is the HP 6005 capable of pushing audio from it's displayport? I went directly to AMD last night, and installed the latest drivers for the 4200.

I noticed that it did not install the audio, despite the audio drivers being included in the package. So, I tried a forced install of the driver. So, I tried to make a driver -when I right clicked the homemade.inf file and chose install-it said that it could not be installed that way. It appears that the operating system is preventing the audio from being installed.

Here's the thing-in device manager I uninstalled the Realtek driver, rescanned, and I was given a choice of using the realtek drivers or the microsoft HD audio drivers. I opted for those. Now, audio will still play through the tower speaker, still does not play through displayport.

HOWEVER, there is another speaker now listed in the control panel, and if I disable the tower speaker, something is going through that speaker. I just don't hear anything.

So, I'm going to first try getting another adapter. Maybe it is pushing it through the port now. I do agree that I should just get a card and be done with it, especially considering the issues outlined by Glogmore.

(However I do have a Smart TV, just not one of the fancy ones. It's a decent Vizio TV with Yahoo apps. It was very affordable, which is why I chose it. It looks great, which is what really matters. I have an xbox which I used for media streaming, too.

Now, with the PC I will be fairly well-rounded.) Since my version of Windows Ultimate deactivated and then blocked the key when I sysprepped it (OEM key, and I don't feel like contacting the guy I bought it from to have it unblocked), I'll just move ahead with installing FreeNas. I'll keep reporting here, but I would still like a definite answer from HP to my original question.

I don't feel that I should have to pay to get an answer to that question. HP should have that kind of respect for its customers. I do IT for a living, I don't need to pay them for tech support. I just need them to clarify the specs on a machine that they have not spec'd clearly on any document. Mine is called Digital Output (AMD High Definition Audio Device). If so, do you get audio if you select it?No, there isn't.

I'm going to pick up an adapter and see if that does it. If not, I'll just get a card. If it isn't there, then a new adapter won't do anything for you. Go for the card. @Jamie4564, thank you for your post and thanks also to the other IT Pros for their helpful assistance. Do you mind providing me with the case number of your discussion with HP's support team so that I can review and possibly escalate the case? Yes, DisplayPort supports multi-channel audio and many advanced audio features.

DisplayPort to HDMI adapters also include the ability to support HDMI audio.' Are easily available at HP Support Central.

This computer contains two sound cards as written in, one Realtek and the other one is part of the ATI HD 4200. 'Dual-mode DisplayPort (also known as DisplayPort) can directly output single-link HDMI and DVI signals using a simple passive adapter that adjusts from the different connector and the lower voltages used by DisplayPort.' I have consulted your problem with an expert who recommends these steps in the following order: 'Update BIOS.

Disable not needed devices in BIOS, e.g., serial and parallel ports, etc. Install AMD 785G chipset driver. It is under Optional Downloads tab for the ATI Radeon HD 4200. Install Realtek ALC261 audio driver. Select expert/advanced installation and uncheck USB legacy driver for USB 1.0 audio.

Or install drivers from HP support web page. If everything is correct then Windows Device Manager must display two working sound cards: AMD High Definition Audio Device and Realtek High Definition Audio. Set AMD High Definition Audio Device as default device under Windows Playback Devices.

Check Show disabled and disconnected devices if necessary. On the TV set: Make sure that both video and audio input is set to HDMI in configurations. This setting, if available, is usually under HDMI options.

It can be configured on some TV sets video input HDMI but audio input stereo via RCA sockets. If then there is no sound audible from the TV set try another DisplayPort - HDMI adapter or cable.' And we do understand about being 'inundated.' At your convenience, please keep us updated.
